style by at south by

2012′s south by southwest conference/festival/hullabaloo has come and gone, and i must say it was a blast/headache/sleepless few weeks of awesomeness.  as part of the activities, i went to a few shows, went to a few parties and, for the first time, went to the conference center to check out the style x (style by) fashion component that is fairly new to the SXSW lineup.

i got to go around with my friend and personal stylist, donna ingram, shopping some really cool labels from all over the  country.  i got some boots from bed stü (which i pronounce “bed sty” like bedford stüyvesant) which are supposed to arrive any day…cannot wait…so distracted thinking about them right now…

BUT, what was also cool was that one of my other best friends, erin quinn, editor of austin monthly, attended style x, too, and i tagged along taking photos of the wares.  erin blogged about it recently, and you can read her take on the experience here: erin quinn’s blog post

drive-ins in the slideluck potSHOW

i’m really excited that some of my drive-in photos made it into austin’s 4th slideluck potshow.  the list of photographers showing includes a couple of art institute colleagues, walker pickering and david strohl, and a few other names i recognize…and folks whose work i like. if you can’t make it out saturday (tomorrow, feb 4), [...]

deux best

i love inez and vinoodh.  if you’re not sure who they are, you are clearly not the fashion photography junkie that yours truly is. i’m writing, of course, of Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin.  the dutch photography team (and husband and wife) has been shooting celebrities and fashion stories for the biggest and best [...]

my heart melts

i think i’m pretty good when it comes to casting models. i needed a model for a necklace–i’m working a lot lately with a client who is launching a line in time for christmas–and i immediately knew who i wanted to work with: gnocchi roth. O.M.G. is she not spectacular???  i love her.

5×7 is here

it opened last night and i hear through the grapevine one of my pieces got bought!  hurrah for arthouse and hurrah for moi.  it’s a thrill, right?  to hear some stranger liked your stuff? here’s what he/she got:

5×7 is coming!

for the 3rd year in a row, and despite the recent brouhaha that went down at the esteemed arthouse at the jones center, i submitted some pieces for the annual 5×7 show. the splurge party is thursday and the artists’ party is friday (the 13th…do do do doooooo). i’ll post samples after the partay.

shoots that say, “i care”

over the past several months, a friend and i have produced a handful of ad campaign images for a company called carepackages.com who make (you guessed it) care packages! they’re laid-back, fun shoots that involve about a day of shooting tabletop stills and then a day of shooting models for the lifestyle component images. the [...]

new austin monthly shoots

the latest austin monthly arrived in the mail the other day. tonight i sat down to flip through and was surprised to see my name in the contributing photographers list…strange, i know, but it’s been a pretty hectic month: houseguests, finals week at school, a big photo shoot that took a whole weekend, et cetera, [...]

in the habit of looking

so, i got word not too too long ago that a triptych i did of some drive-in photos from my thesis project (see below) is going to be part of a gallery show (called “In the Habit of Seeing,” si?) as part of my alma mater’s (the brooks institute of photography’s) 65th anniversary celebrations. sweet [...]

shoot for the june issue of austin monthly

when you see colt mccoy’s sweet face staring off the cover of the june issue of austin monthly, pick it up and flip through the pages a bit.  you might stumble into the “talk” section, for which i shot the TINY town of albert, texas. the place consists of a bar and a dance hall…and [...]

big and beautiful

not too long ago, a co-worker whom i’ve never met in person (funny situation) commissioned a print of the photograph i use for much of my branding (the acapulco drive-inn sign in B&W, seen below).  i obviously like the image since i use it for my promotional materials, but i hadn’t really ever thought about [...]

49′er drive-in

the 49′er in sacramento was one of the worst-preserved drive-ins i came across, but these images are among my favorites from the project. that’s what the sky really looks like in central california on summer afternoons. not bad, huh?

a night at the museum

friday night i volunteered to help out at the austin center for photography‘s (acp’s) latest event, a talk (or lecture, whichever you prefer) by abelardo morell as part of the center’s icons of photography series.  these talks are always hosted at the beautiful blanton museum of art on the UT campus and are an awesome [...]

thanks to fellow brooks alumni!

this afternoon i took my architectural photography students to the agave neighborhood in east (and i mean EAST) austin.  it was a field trip on which they were given access to several modern homes that are being built out there–SUPER cool houses–and then we met up with some freelance photographers that went to brooks (where [...]

los angeles miscellanea, part 1

when i lived in santa barbara, my friends and i would often jaunt down to the city of angels to see concerts and such. these are some snapshots from a trip to the wiltern a couple of autumns ago. behind the hotel café: across from the ENORMOUS movie theater where we saw “michael clayton:” in [...]

ceres drive-in

this drive-in in ceres, california, had so much signage posted, discouraging gang activity and paraphernalia, that it was a wonder to me the place was as clean as it was…and not riddled with bullet holes or covered in inflammatory graffiti or something.
